I'm trying to find any information on a relative of mine who supposedly work at Los Alamos early on in the project.  His name was Larry McCarthy, and his background was in engineering. I do know that while at Los Alamos, his wife (a great Aunt of mine) and children lived in Hawthorne New Jersy.
Any information would be greatly appreciated -

Dayton Carritt and Jeanne Carritt - Looking for Information

April 8, 2003 - My uncle Dayton Carritt was a scientist--chemist/physicist? with the Los Alamos project and worked with Niels Bohr. My aunt, Jeanne Carritt was a medical technician during the same time period. I would like to have them included with the veterans but would also like to know more about their particular contributions to the Manhattan Project.  Barbara Brooks - Please contact us via Feedback above with any information.

Does Anyone Remember Dr. John G. Waugh?
Dr. John G. Waugh was a civilian scientist. He was a physicist at the Naval Ordinance Test Station and
worked from 1941-1945 on the Manhattan project. He witnessed the detonation of the first test A Bomb. He told me later on that although the scientists were naturally hoping for success, some were worried that the world would not be able to handle the power. Naturally he did not talk about it at the time. After 1945 he was employed by the Navy and worked out of Pasadena as a physicist and mathematician. From 1964-67 he was Senior Research Fellow in Engineering at California Institute of Technology, but their files are classified. He was named Chairman of the BuWeps Hydroballistics Advisory Committee when he was Physicist with the Propulsion Division of the Underwater Ordinance Department. In 1972 a book "Hydroballistics Modeling" by John G. Waugh and G. W. Stubstad was published by the Naval Undersea Center, San Diego, CA.

I hope to find someone who remembers him or can give me any information, especially about the Manhattan Project years.

Does Anyone Remember Miriam Young Krollman; WAC?

April 3, 2003 - Miriam Young Krollman is currently living in Bethlehem, Pa and has lived in this town since 1946. Worked with Bethlehem Steel and Western Electric. Retired in 1983 with Keystone Bank. She will be 82 years of age in August this year. The interest in locating this web site was due to information she has kept regarding the Project. We found it to be most interesting and was glad to see that there were people out there helping us to locate information to bring back wonderful memories she had about her past. I am proud of Miriam Young Krollman and the assignment she took on in 1945. This was a courageous thing she did for her country. We often sit around and talk and view her pictures and information she has kept all of these years. We would love it if someone could reach us regarding other information regarding people that were in her unit; so we could try and reach them. What a wonderful Reunion this could be.  Maria Reedy

I am looking for information about my uncle, Walter Pocock who worked on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. I believe he was a metallurgist from John Hopkins. Thanks
Looking for Information - Hans Heinrich Staub...
I'm trying to track down information about the life and career of a Swiss physicist who lived and worked at Los Alamos as part of the Manhattan Project - Hans Heinrich Staub.  He came to Los Alamos from Stanford University with Felix Bloch, and I believe they may have formed something called the "Detection" group, but am not sure.  Web searches (including this one & the LANL.gov site) have yielded a surprising lack of information on Staub, and virtually no personal details about his life. Except for about a dozen of so brief mentions in articles about other scientists, it's as if he never existed. (There are a couple of photos of him with other physicists at Los Alamos in the Emilio Segré Visual Archives.)  I do know that after the war he returned to Stanford to continue work related to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and later moved back to Switzerland to become the director of the Physics Institute at the University of Zurich. All their info is, unfortunately, in German.  I'm interested in any biographical information (in English) about his life and career, not technical papers, and am hoping that someone can refer me to a person, organization or publication.  Thanks,
Doug Brightwell

Hi...
I am looking for members of the Security Guards at Los Alamos. A small group of men that I don't believe ever numbered over about fifty at any one time. I don't know when they were organized. I was a member in 1946, 47 and January February 1948. We were charged with removing the fissionable material from the vaults then guarding the material in the labs or any place it went. We also transported it any place it went in the US and some times out of the country. I have been in contact with members Robert Fortenberry and Robert Schwerin. We are trying to find more of us. I mention Pat Cleary who was killed in Korea. Michael Vickio had mentioned to Fortenberry that some one in his family had been looking for info on him It would be great to find more of us. We are all 75 or older so time is short. Hope someone can help. Thanks, Jim

Lost Trinity Photo...

As an authority on the Trinity test I am hoping you can be of assistance. I am trying to locate a photo of Oppenheimer and Groves standing at the base of the tower after the test--it was a UPI photo, and it was autographed to me by Oppenheimer and Groves. No need to tell you of the sentimental value involved. Sincerely,

Comments:

Henry Nieber came back after serving as an MP at Los Alamos, never mentioned his service.  A few months after his discharge, he was passing a robbery scene in N.Y. he grabbed the armed gunman, disarmed him, and held him by the neck until the police arrived.  When he was at home he acted strangely, guarded his food, and didn't allow visitors into his house. Outside of his house he was friendly, inside he was a changed person could the government have indoctrinated him, or done something to him to make him act that way?  He died with TB, throat cancer, and he also had diabetes at the time of death.  He never had any contact with his side of the family, and said not to ask him about them. Does any body know anything about his family?  John

Mike Olsen, SED...

Does anyone recall Mike Olsen SED demolitions who drove Fermi to the site of Trinity after the explosion in the lead lined tank and had helped wire the gadget prior to detonation.
His son John Olsen would appreciate the inputs and Mike would be glad to hear from you. I'd be happy to act as relay for you or to make contact.  Thank You John Glenfield

Raymond L. Hamilton & Mary Olipra...

I am the son of Raymond L. Hamilton and Mary Olipra.  Both wound up in Los Alamos towards the end of WWII. My Dad came as a member of the Army (SED), having served in Burma and contracting malaria.  My Mom was a WAC and served in the Mess Hall.  Both were assigned to the Project. My dad worked for the Lab as a Carpenter.  After the War they married.  My Dad continued to work for the AEC. I was Born in Los Alamos and I still remember Los Alamos, kindergarten (Miss Swans' Class), and crossing the checkpoint to get into town.  My Parents are still alive.  Anyone remember them?  Please contact me at : Rayham@hotmail.com  6/11/02

Duncan Peck Macdougall...

I am searching for information about Duncan Peck Macdougall, who worked on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos.  I am not sure if he was civilian or military.  Please contact us if you know of him.  Submitted by Antoinette Barker support@childrenofthemanhattanproject.org

Robert ("Robin") Nathan Gordon...

There are a lot of stories told in my family that have turned out to be exaggerations or untrue, but I'd like to try and find out if this one has any basis in fact.  My father, Robert Nathan ("Robin") Gordon, was an applied physics guy who (really) held some patents and was smart in applied ways. He died of a mysterious medical condition in 1957.  The story in my family is he worked on the Project, helping to design the casing for Fat Man. Given the track record of family oral history, this could be anything from a complete fabrication to an exaggeration to sorta truth to factually accurate.   Has this name ever come up in your work?   If it hasn't, what are the chances, in your opinion, that it might be true to some degree?  Please contact us if you know of Robert Nathan Gordon at support@childrenofthemanhattanproject.org  Submitted by Jeffrey Angus

Windsor Raymond & the Detonator Group...

My dad, Windsor Raymond, was a machinist/tool&die maker.  It is my understanding he worked on the designs for the machines that made the detonator for the first A-test.  My mother often told the story of when the test went off at Alamagordo all the men in the group my father worked with walked around with one pants leg rolled up, but she couldn't remember why.  Is there anyone out there who recalls that and can tell me more about it?  Lynne Raymond Sampson  support@childrenofthemanhattanproject.org

    Team From The Clouds

My Dad ,Joseph Hopper was at Los Alamos and he was a machinist and he often talked about the "team from the clouds". He explained that the young "experts" were really very young intellects who were drawn into this project not necessarily by choice and they were frustrated and bored with all the secrecy and work with no outlets. A basketball team was formed of these young men and scrimmages were played but no one knew any more than they were the "team from the clouds" as there were ferried around on a small aircraft.

one job in the S.E.D. at Los Alamos

I was a soldier in the U.S. Army when I was sent to Los Alamos in May 1944 and assigned to "Special Engineering", The S.E.D. I was first assigned to Major Jerome Ackerman, a civil engineer, and an "officer and a gentleman." A fine man. I was given a series of assignments, both on "The Hill" and off. I worked in the library on heat transfer problems, on the early site layouts at Trinity, in the high explosive lab at S Site, in the mechanical design area as a courier, and at various other jobs until, in 1948, I left for college at UNM and eventually a 29 year career with IBM.

Dr. Cleve Beller

Looking for any information about Dr. Cleve Beller, a doctor at Los Alamos.

Growing up in Okmulgee OK back in the 50s, Dr. Beller was my physician. It's not surprising he never spoke of his Los Alamos experience given the political climate of the time.  He had a wife, Kay, and two sons Cleve Jr. and Donnie. They moved from Okmulgee to Tulsa in the late 60s. I saw him once in 1970 but never stayed in touch.  I heard that his son Don may be a music teacher in the midwest. His older son was schooled in Europe and may have become a doctor.  Cleve Jr and I was contemporaries and I've been trying to locate him. Hence your item through a web search.

My father has told me that my grandfather worked in part on the engineering aspect of the Manhattan Project.  He didn't quite know the details since he was only a toddler at the time, but he did live in Los Alamos.  He claims that my grandfather worked on the contraption that held the a-bomb while it was transported in the carrier.  I am not skeptical about the truth of it, but I would definite like to have some documented proof that he was involved.  I have always said that perhaps my granddad would have been famous had the bomb blown up on the plane.  Do you know if it is at all possible to find out this information.  My grandfather's name was John E. Bowerbank.

Do You Know Someone Who Worked for Edenfield Electric at Oak Ridge?
Denise L.: Barbour
Email: dbarb@ezworks.net

My father, Melvin L. Dietrich, worked at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, three different times. In 1944-45, he worked for Comstock & Bryant Electric Companies as a foreman at the K-25 complex. In 1950-51, and 1954-55, he worked as a welder and/or electrician for the Edenfield Electric Company at the K-29 facility (in the K-25 complex).

During his work at Oak Ridge we lived in Kingston, Tennessee. As an elementary school teacher, my mother taught at schools in both Rockwood (1950-51) and Kingston (1954-55). Dad was a member of the Masonic Order and I believe he attended meetings in Kingston.

If anyone knows someone who worked for Edenfield Electric at the Oak Ridge site who may remember my father, I would be most interested in speaking with them. Thank you.

I am looking for anyone who might have known my grandfather. He was a civil engineer - William Dennison Kelley or Bill Kelley.( Born Oct 31, 1901) He was married to Florence Kelley and had 4 children. William Jr., Marcia, Patricia and Donald. They lived in Oak Ridge TN for three years while my grandfather worked on a "secret" military project. My grandparents are from Charleston and later on Lewisburg W.Va. I have recently learned from my mother that he received the Army-Navy E Medal for his participation in the project. (This info is very sketchy and I am not sure if that is really the name of the medal he received but my mom thinks so) My grandfather and grandmother are both deceased and I would love to hear from anyone who might have known about this project...the medal... or if by chance someone knew my grandfather. Thank you

My father, Ralph P. Wyrick, (the Col.) worked for ORNL and electrified the mechanical slave arms that were used to work behind the thick glass. I understand that these were on display at one time and the WYRICK REUNION is being held the Great Smokey Mountains during July and I wanted to invite all to see one of what my father had accomplished during his employment. I do not have much information about my grandfather, he died before I was born. My dad didn't talk about my grandfather much because they were not close and he has also since passed away. I know my dad lived at Oak Ridge Tennessee as a boy while his father worked there. (they were next door neighbors to the Rosenbergs and Ethel babysat my dad and aunt.) My dad also told me grandfather was at New Mexico without him and even on the aircraft carrier the bombs dropped on Japan were launched from, but I am not sure if that is true.
My grandfather, Merton G Ridge was a civil engineer with a doctorate from the University of Michigan. His Phd research, with others, resulted in expandable "joints?" that allowed concrete bridges to expand and contract in cold weather areas. I believe he worked on the housing or casings, i do not know the correct term, of the first bombs. I have seen but since lost a paper signed my the then secretary of war thanking my grandfather for his work on the Manhattan Project, but have no record of what he did.
I was hoping someone at your website may have known him or know of him and give me more information about his work.

Question for anyone: I'm looking for someone who may have information about an Oak Ridge war years scientist named Ted Hall, a brilliant physicist who was only 18 years old when he was in OR. Also, for interviews, I am seeking Blacks who either lived and worked in Oak Ridge during the war, or knows someone who did.

Veteran Search - Chicago Met Lab      Scroll To Top Top

Looking for Information on Daniel Petersen? - Chicago Met Lab or Berkeley
Jan. 10, 2004
Don DeGrace

Comments:
Let me first applaud everyone involved in the design and information on this website. I have never seen such a comprehensive collection of information on the Manhattan Project. Thank you for this.
My question has to do with information about a relative of mine. My grandmothers brother was apparently involved with the Manhattan Project on some level but I can not find any details of his involvement. It seems that there was a level of shame associated with his involvement so therefore it was never talked about. This is some of the information that I know about him:
Name: Daniel Petersen (Phd.?); Lived in Chicago and California; Was a professor at the University of Chicago?; Was a professor at Berkley?
Is of Danish decent with the family coming from Copenhagen when he was a child by way of Canada. If he was alive today he would be about 95 yrs old., so in 45' he would have been about 36 years old.  My grandmother told a story that after the first bomb was dropped he received a phone call instructing him to report to a designated "safe" location. The family didn't know why he left at the time the only thing the family knew was that he had to leave and could not be contacted for several months. Was this a true story? Did any other personnel have to report to "safe" locations?
Where can I find information about him or any of his involvement? Did any of the scientists work under false identities?
Thank you for any assistance that anyone can provide.

George Schaeffer - U. of Chicago Met Lab

Hello! Got your email from the "Met Lab" web site...wondered if you might be a source of the information I need. My father, George Schaeffer, was a chemist at the University of Chicago as a graduate student, then assistant professor, between 1940-1949. He worked with Hermann Schlessinger as his major professor, and for a good part of his work there, I understand that he worked on the Manhattan Project. He did his later professional work in boron, so my guess is that he worked in the Met lab... My siblings and I would like to find out more about his role on the Manhattan Project, but, unfortunately, he died in 1959, at the age of 41, and my mother is also long deceased. Perhaps you can help us learn more or direct us... Thank you very much. Monica Schaeffer 6160 Valley View Road Oakland, CA 94611 If anyone knows of George Schaeffer, please contact us.

William MeBane - Columbia SAM Lab...

Email: tkenna@ldeo.columbia.edu

I am trying to obtain information on William Mebane. As far as I know, he was a machinist or physicist working in the physics lab at Columbia. Does anyone have any information about Bill or what his contributions to the Manhattan Project were? His grandson is a good friend of mine, and we have often wondered about the details of his involvement. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Robert Stockstill - Columbia University

Thank you for your reply. Mr. Robert Stockstill is still living. He is approximately 75 years old. He was interviewed at Columbia University by Einstein and Mr. Oppenhiemer (sp?). He stated that he was very young when he worked on the Project and that he was instrumental in developing the detonation device. I believe that he may have worked on the Project in New York and Los Alamos, but I'm not completely certain. His academic career includes his attendance at MIT, NYU, and Columbia---Mechanical engineering, I believe. He is also a three star Admiral. Thank you for your time, Wendy Vaughn If anyone remembers Robert Stockstill, please contact us.

Dr. Karl D. Larsen; M.I.T.

Dr. Larsen was my uncle. He is deceased. My mother told me years ago of his secret work at MIT in WW2 on the spectrum of heavy water and that his work was a prerequisite to the first a-bomb. She said two physicists were on the heavy water spectrum project, he and an assistant who was from Texas. My uncle told her and my father that what he did on the spectrum of heavy water was a scientific first. He said that he worked long hours, day and night. We would like to know more about what he actually did. If anyone has information, please contact Richard Guay at raguay@midmaine.com

WAS THE BERYLLIUM CORPORATION THE SUPPLIER FOR THE PROJECT????
tomcat@nexet.net

Comments:
One of the KEY ELEMENTS in this early nuclear research, was the element BERYLLIUM. As far as I can tell, the preferred source of this product during those years was The Beryllium Corporation, of Reading Pennsylvania. I have a sincere interest in this because my Father was one of the metallurgical engineers there at the time, and he was very quiet when I asked him about this. Many years later, about 1967, after I became a nuclear reactor operator, I asked him again..about the company's part in the Manhattan Project, or his involvement. He replied... I wish I could tell you Tom, but it is still classified"

I need some help and am hoping you can point me in the right direction.
With regards to the info below here are my questions:
How would one go about researching which companies were involved in either contract or subcontract work for the mechanical parts of the A-Bomb?  My father, Antonio D. Puentes was deferred from WW2 because he was the shop foreman for Aviation Supply Company***. This company was involved in manufacturing parts (Machine Screws) for the war effort. The story goes that Aviation Supply (and my father) was contracted to produce some small machine screws or other assembly parts for the A-Bomb. One person said that most likely the work was subcontracted to Aviation Supply and it would be helpful to find the Contractor.  I'm planning on going to the National Archives later in May and was hoping to research this matter. I understand that it will be very difficult to make a direct link between those manufactured parts and my father, but I was hoping to at least show the link between Aviation Supply and the Manhattan Project.

My grandfather worked for Texaco during World War II. From what little information I have been able to gather from family members, he enlisted in the military but was not allowed to serve due to his job assignment with Texaco. I know that he was involved in some way in locating uranium in the Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico area. I have been told that he and the others he worked with would drive around in ambulances to disguise what they were actually doing. Can anyone verify whether or not engineers with Texaco were involved in some type of mining for the government? Is there any way to find out if he was involved in some aspect of the Manhattan Project and what his role might have been?

title: How can I find out what my uncle did for the Manhattan project?
While going through some old family documents I found a certificate from the "Army service forces~corps of engineers" for my late uncle Bert W. Shaw. It also says he participated in work essential to the production of the atomic bomb etc. etc. No one in my family had ever mentioned this to me nor do any of the surviving family know anything about what uncle Bert did during war time other than that he served. I guess my question is this...Is there any way to find out just what his contribution to the project was? Is his service record available to me in any way? I know so very little about him that I don't have much information to go on. Any advise would be of great help. Thanks

Looking for veterans of the MED "silver program"
I am a writer in Columbus, OH. I'm writing a book concerning the "silver program," when the MED borrowed over 14,000 tons of silver from the U.S. Treasury to use as coils and bus bars in the Y12 electromagnets. I would very much like to interview any veterans of the MED, either in security or operations, or any plant operation personnel, that was involved in the transport, processing, and/or assembly of the silver at any of these locations:
U.S. Treasury Bullion Depository (West Point, NY)
U.S. Metals Refining Company (Carteret, NJ)
Phelps/Dodge (Elizabeth/Bayway, NJ)
Allis Chalmers (West Allis, WI)
Y12 - Clinton Engineer Works (Oak Ridge, TN)
Also, if anyone has any photos of the silver (or the large steel containers General Groves describes in Now It Can Be Told) at any point along the trail, I would be very interested in purchasing copies.
Looking forward to talking to anyone! I will gladly make all long distance calls or make any travel arrangements. Thanks in advance for your help!

    Civilian Employees in Washington, D.C.

I noticed on your web site you have left out the civilian employees of General Grove's office in Washington, D.C. My aunt was the Chief Coding clerk for General Groves during World War II. Here is some information I think should be included on your web page: Alice (Hails) Compton was the Chief Coding Clerk to General Groves during World War II. General Groves was the head of the Manhattan Project, which produced the first Atomic Bomb. Alice was under guard all during the war. She lived in Washington, D.C. with her husband, Alfred Marvin Compton, Jr. during World War II. Marvin thought Alice was having an affair because she could never talk about her work nor could she ever discuss who she was seeing or meeting. She would get telephone calls at all hours of the day and night and had to work odd hours. Marvin never knew anything about Alice's activities until after the Atomic bomb was dropped on Japan in August, 1945. Alice said she was housed in a special section of Groves' office which was sealed off from the rest of the building. She was the only person allowed in that section. Alice had top secret clearance and coded and decoded all messages that were sent or received by General Groves and his staff. She was constantly checked for security. When she went home to Texico, IL General Groves security personnel has ordered the Sheriff of Jefferson County to check on her at her parent's home. She had security guards with her at all times. During the early part of World War II, Japan sent thousands of balloons with bombs attached over the Pacific ocean which would land in Washington, Oregon and California. When these bombs started killing civilians, the government put a stop to all stories on these balloons. However, Alice said the reports continue to pour into Grove's office. She said many hundreds of people were killed or injured by these bombs. Alice said she had no idea what the Manhattan project was making. She saw all of the messages but even the decoded messages had code names within the messages like "fat boy", "Little Boy", which meant nothing to her. She also met Alfred Compton (no relation), Dr. Oppenheimer, and other scientists who were working on the bomb. She said General Groves was a warm, kind man who would take time out to talk with almost anyone on his staff. He was a great man to work for. All decoding and coding equipment and messages were locked up at night. Alice said she was required to change locks every month. Her office had special communications lines to all of the enrichment plants and Los Alamos and to all of the Universities involved in the atomic bomb research. They did not have to go through the regular communication lines. Messages were sent via teletype machines. At one time the secret code was broken by an older woman employee in General Groves' office. Alice was called to the Pentagon for interregation. She was under suspicion until they discovered it was another person in the office that messed up.

    Explosion at Philadelphia Navy Yard

On September 2, 1944, an explosion at the Philadelphia Navy Yard killed to chemical engineers. These engineers were working on the problem of the thermal diffusion separation of uranium isotopes at the Naval Research Lab at the time of the explosion. All were part of the Manhattan Project. The explosion released a radioactive cloud of uranium hexafluoride gas which migrated across much of the Navy Yard, including the battleship USS Wisconsin which had just returned from its shakedown cruise. Because of the secrecy, no one was ever told or made aware of what the mysterious yellow residue was. We are trying to find any employees of the Navy Yard or sailors aboard the Wisconsin who remember the horrific explosion.

    Dr. Alfred Herman Weber...

I am looking for information on my wife's father, Dr. Alfred Herman Weber, and what his role was in the Manhattan Project. We know he was a nuclear physicist and taught physics at St. Louis University and later worked at the Red Stone Arsenal in Alabama.  Please contact us with any information

    Arthur L. Nelson...

I wanted to know if you could assist me in discovering information about Mr. Nelson, an MIT graduate (1914), who assisted the government  in the Manhattan Project. He was an officer for the U.S. Navy,
had Security Clearances in connection with with Atomic Power Classified project, member of AICE, AIEE (fellow, life member), ASME, SAME, Boston Society Civil Engineers, and many other associations.  He was born June 15, 1898.

Our family purchased the remaining acreage of his once 10,000 acre ranch along with his home located in Blanco, Texas.  Through the grapevine, I have discovered his participation in possibly developing
the trigger mechanism in connection with the Manhattan Project.

Interview of Children of the Manhattan Project...

My father and uncle both worked on the Manhattan Project at the Met Lab in Chicago. I am interviewing people whose mother or father worked on the project whether it be Chicago, Los Alamos, or Oak Ridge. I am interested in understanding how this "legacy" may have had different influences on people in both their personal and professional lives. Please contact me if you would like to be interviewed or if you know someone you think would. I am planning to compile this into a book.

    J. R. Oppenheimer Quote

    Bradley Quote

"We have too many men of science, too few men of God. We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon of the Mount... The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing than we know about living..." Gen. Omar N. Bradley; Chief of Staff; U.S. Army; 1948

"Now we are all sons of bitches!" Kenneth Bainbridge; "Trinity" Test Director...Following the fearsomely successful explosion early in the morning of July 16, 1945, he congratulated J. Robert Oppenheimer and the others, then made his legendary remark. Oppenheimer later remarked that this was the best thing anyone had said just after the test. Ken Bainbridge subsequently was deeply dedicated to the control of nuclear weapons.

    Fantastic Quote

Sometime in 1943, General Groves, while visiting the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory at the University of California, which was at work separating U-235 by electromagnetic means, attempted to spur Ernest O. Lawrence (the director of the lab) on by saying to him, "You know, Dr. Lawrence, I hope you realize that your reputation is at stake here". Later that evening over cocktails, Lawrence, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1939, turned and said to Groves, "You know, General, my reputation has been made; but yours is at stake here." General Groves did not respond.

    What an Ego!!

"We (the military leaders at Los Alamos) came up through kindergarten with them (the scientists). While they could put elaborate equations on the board, which we may not be able to follow in their entirety, when it came to what was so and what was probably so, we knew just about as much as they did. So when I say that we were responsible for the scientific decisions, I am not saying that we were extremely able nuclear physicists, because actually we were not. We were what might be termed thoroughly practical nuclear physicists." Gen. Leslie Groves - 1955

    George Kistiakowski ("Kisty")

"After a few weeks of this, I found that my position was untenable because I was essentially in the middle trying to make sense of the efforts of two men who were at each other's throats. One was Captain Parsons who tried to run his division the way it is done in the military - very conservative. The other was, of course, Seth Neddermeyer, who was the exact opposite of Parsons, working away in a little corner. The two never agreed on anything and they certainly didn't want me interfering and because it was so impossible I asked to be relieved of my duties" Dr. George B. Kistiakowski - a Harvard chemist and explosives expert brought in by Oppenheimer to spur the floundering implosion program. Fortunately for us, his resignation was not accepted by Oppie and his group eventually solved all of the major problems facing the Project.

    Speaking of Groves

"He's the biggest sonovabitch I've ever met in my life, but also one of the most capable individuals. He had an ego second to none, he had tireless energy - he was a big man, a heavy man but he never seemed to tire. He had absolute confidence in his decisions and he was absolutely ruthless in how he approached a problem to get it done. But that was the beauty of working for him - that you never had to worry about the decisions being made or what it meant. In fact I've often thought that if I were to have to do my part over again, I would select Groves as boss. I hated his guts and so did everyone else but we had our form of understanding" Col. K. D. Nichols; Commanding Officer; Manhattan Engineer District

Looking for Information About the Electronics Used in the Atom Bombs?
Ron Waits
Kansas, U.S.A.
ronaldwaits@sbcglobal.net
Comments:
It isn't so much a question as a request. I am, and have been for over 30 years, an electronic technician and have witnessed the advent of electronics over that period of time.
As things are quite small in today's electronic world, I have always wanted to see some pictures of the components and soldering that was done with some of the equipment inside one of the bombs. They didn't have PC boards as we do today and I would think everything was hard wired. Just curious as to the workmanship available at that time.
If anyone knows of a site or has some pictures showing some of the inside work in the electronics, I would be appreciative to view them.

Looking for Information About the Beryllium Corporation?

Username: Tom G
Userstate: Louisa, Va
WAS THE BERYLLIUM CORPORATION THE SUPPLIER FOR THE PROJECT????

B-17 Plane Crash in Ireland...

I am seeking information on an American bomber, probably a B17 Flying Fortress which crashed in Ireland towards the end of the war in Europe. I have received information from a contact in the British military which indicates that this aircraft was carrying parts of or information relating to the Manhattan project. The aircraft is thought to have been bound for RAF Valley in North Wales UK. The crew all died as a result of gun shot wounds not received in the crash. Can anyone tell me more about this?  Matthew Rimmer: snafu@bushinternet.com ; Message posted 5/20/02

"Fat Man" Silhouettes, Correct Colors for "Necessary Evil" and 393 BS art

Curious as to the number of "Fat Man" silhouettes on the noses of the B-29s; I understand they were black for the "pumpkin" missions and red for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki missions, but the number of these silhouettes varies from 3 to 6 on many of the pictures I've seen. Were all the aircraft in the 509th "awarded" the same number of these silhouettes? Some aircraft which were not part of both missions (or EITHER mission, in some cases) sport 6 silhouettes. I'm curious because I'm considering having a leather jacket painted with the nose art from the plane my great-uncle George Marquardt flew, No. 91, on the Hiroshima mission, and want to adorn the bottom of the design with the correct number of "Fat Man" silhouettes. (Yes, I know No. 91 wasn't "his" airplane, but it's the one he flew into the history books.) The only photos of No. 91 with its "Necessary Evil" nose art show five silhouettes, four black and one red. Is this correct or should it be four black and two red? Also, can anyone help with identifying the correct colors for the nose art on "Necessary Evil" as well as the 393rd Bomb Sq patch? Thanks for all your help.

    We Were Wrong!

DATE: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 00:31:37 From: "Laura Hernandez" To: "gadget" I'm going to be taking a trip to New Mexico with a friend real soon, and all I can say after reading the whole story on how "The Manhattan Project" came about, I do not wish to visit this tourist site/museum. It would just be too upsetting. I need to pray tonight real hard just to avoid any nightmares! We should have been more patient. It is so typical of our society (then and now) to want "quick answers and solutions". Tsk, tsk! While I'm aware of how people might have felt back then, I know people who still feel that way today, and I'd like to show them a few photos of women screaming and running around with their flesh hanging from their bones!. Shame on that decision to drop that bomb. I'd expect more from our smart leaders and society (or are they?).
