16-5  Alan G. Vorwald

responsibilities:

Worked in computing department under theoretical physics division under Hans Bethe and Richard Feynman.

specialty:

Although I was trained as an electrical engineer, I worked as a mathematician operating IBM machines to solve problems related to mathematical model of the plutonium bomb.

mp-contribution:

I operated IBM machines for 7 months in the numerical solution of mathematical problems related to the development of the atomic bomb.

mp-experience:

My most interesting experience was working under the supervision of Richard Feynman, who went on to become a nobel laureate in physics.

mp-stories:

Despite the fact that we were at war and were working on a top secret weapon, I spent much of my limited leisure time playing 2nd base on the SED # 1 baseball team in the Los Alamos Baseball League. One of my most memorable moments was hitting two home runs in a game against the MP's. One of my fans was John Kemeny who recorded the moment on the tabulating machine and distributed it throughout the department. John Kemeny later became President of Dartmouth University.
