15-9  Edward C. Long

He returned after the war to U. of GA, where he earned his Master's degree in Physics.

Subsequently he returned to Oak Ridge. For some reason, his wartime service was not counted in his seniority, apparently since he had gone back to school - this was a bone of contention with him.

My mother, Mary Elizabeth Barnes, earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Auburn. During the war, she had worked in Michigan at a land mine factory, where she did quality control work. She was hired at Y-12 after the war, working in radiochemistry. She recalled that her boss was completely against women being in an engineering position, so he gave her the dirty jobs - climbing up the inside of stacks or wading in sludge to take samples.

They met when my father was her supervisor in Health Physics. She left ORR employment in about 1952, about 6 month pregnant with my older sister. My father continued working there, at X-10 and K-25. At X-10, he was a pioneer programmer for the ORACLE. He continued to work in the Math Panel and its decendants, and retired a programmer analysist in the late 1980's.

It would be interesting and helpful if anyone has records or recollections of either of my parents' participation during and after the war.
