Later that
year he was made chief administrative officer for the Project, and in
1944, he took on the additional duties of dean of students, secretary of
the faculties, and professor of philosophy and education for the
University of Chicago. He attained the post of vice president and dean of
faculties shortly after the end of World War II. In 1947, he went to
Stanford University as dean of students and professor of philosophy, but
in 1950, he returned to Chicago as vice president in charge of
development. The following year he replaced Robert Hutchins as chancellor,
a position he held until 1960, when he joined Standard Oil of Indiana.
