Arnold Kramish |

Arnold Kramish participated in the Manhattan Project as a member of the SED at Oak Ridge, the Philadelphia Navy Yard, and Los Alamos. (He was the third member of the team present during the explosion at the Philadelphia Navy Yard which killed Douglas Meigs and Peter Bragg) Immediately following the war, Kramish was with the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1951, he became a senior staff member of the RAND corporation. From 1970 - 1976, he was posted in Paris as U.S. Science & Technology Counselor for UNESCO and OECD. He is a consultant and author of several books, including The Griffin (Houghton Mifflin, Boston, MA. 1986). Currently Mr. Kramish is working on his memoirs. |

Gilbert P.
Mathis was born in Perry, FL in 1917. After attending the University
of Florida, he became a civilian employee of the U. S. Army Signal Corps.
He was later recruited for Los Alamos while attending school in Chicago.
His wife, the former Norma Gwendelyn Wentworth, was also a Signal Corps
employee who worked at Los Alamos. (see below) They both lived in Bandolier, NM before
housing at Los Alamos was available. Upon leaving Los Alamos, Gilbert served at the U. S. Navy Mine Defense Lab in Panama City, FL until his retirement. Gilbert Mathis died of leukemia on February 11, 1984.

War II. It is believed that she was recruited from Barnes Hospital
in St. Louis, MO., where several other hospital workers were recruited. In December 1945, she married T3 Carl Crumb, a SED at Los Alamos. |

fuses, office clerk, bomb disposal, aerial gunner. Favorite Stories: Dropped fake spider over bed onto mans face scaring the crap out of him. Wrote on a conventional bomb "to tojo from ann & sid. Sent home original picture of Tibbetts waiving out window of Enola Gay just before takeoff to drop the first atomic bomb. His son jack has possession of this original photo today.

Gordon Smith was a chemical engineer with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers "Special Engineering Detachment" at the Clinton Engineer Works (Oak Ridge). Initially he worked as a motor-generator operator and later as a shift supervisor of an analytical control laboratory for analysis of materials at various points. He was assigned to the Y-12 Electro-magnetic Separation Plant operated by Tennessee Eastman.

Responsibilities: Draftsman for Process Improvement Section of Tennessee Eastman Corp. located in Y-12 Born in Crescent City, FL on March 9, 1922. Survived the Great Depression, married Guy O. Stenstrom, Jr. in 1941. Daughters Patricia (born in Oak Ridge), Sharon now live in Atlanta. After Oak Ridge - obtained cosmetology license and worked as such before employment in Dept. of Health (State of Florida). Retired, State of Florida. Living in Orlando area. Writing a book "AS IS", soon to be published. In this I relate briefly some of the experiences of Oak Ridge. This was an experience I wouldn't take the world for, but which I hope we are never faced with again. |

Charles C. Sterett worked as a physicist at the Clinton Engineer Works (Oak Ridge), one of the largest sites of the Manhattan Project during World War II. Little is known about his specific duties and at which plant (ie., Y-12, K-25, etc.) he actually worked. His son, Nathan, has submitted this information in the hopes that someone will recognize his name and be able to fill in some of the blanks. If you know of Charles C.
