Operation
Crossroads was a joint operation of the U.S. Navy, the Army Air Forces,
and the Army Ground Forces, to determine the effect of the atom bomb
against various types of naval vessels. Two tests were carried out
by Joint Task Force One: Test Able - a plutonium bomb similar to Fat Man
was dropped by the B-29 "Dave's Dream" and detonated over a lagoon at
Bikini Atoll in the Pacific on July 1, 1946. Twenty-four days later,
on July 25, 1946, a second device, sitting slightly below the surface of
the water, was detonated. This was called Test Baker. The
