Operation Crossroads - 1946

Operation Crossroads was a joint operation of the U.S. Navy, the Army Air Forces, and the Army Ground Forces, to determine the effect of the atom bomb against various types of naval vessels.  Two tests were carried out by Joint Task Force One: Test Able - a plutonium bomb similar to Fat Man was dropped by the B-29 "Dave's Dream" and detonated over a lagoon at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific on July 1, 1946.  Twenty-four days later, on July 25, 1946, a second device, sitting slightly below the surface of the water, was detonated.  This was called Test Baker.  The below gallery and associated pages contain a pictorial record of Operation Crossroads.
