Join Us in Oak Ridge & Knoxville - June 16-19, 2005

Mark your calendar for June 16th to the 19th, 2005. During that weekend, our organization is partnering with the City of Oak Ridge, the City of Knoxville, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and others to host a comprehensive event to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Manhattan Project and the end of World War II. This will be the largest event of this type ever held and will take place at a variety of venues in and around Oak Ridge and Knoxville. Veterans from all of the operating units of the Manhattan Project are being invited and it should be an exciting time for all. We will be sending out a special newsletter shortly which will contain all of the details for this spectacular event.

Welcome to our final newsletter for 2004. We hope that all of you had a great holiday and that you and your family are blessed with a new year that is filled with happiness and prosperity. We have a lot of new things planned for 2005 and we sincerely appreciate your interest in preserving the history of the Manhattan Project and the 509th Composite Group.

Web Site is 5 Years Old & Growing

On December 29, 2004 our web site, "Children of the Manhattan Project", celebrated the completion of 5 years on the Internet. During that time, we have experienced rapid growth and we are definitely having an impact on the way young people view the history of the atomic bomb project during World War II. We completed the year with 371,400 visitors and 1,941,000 web pages viewed. Although this was slightly less than our projections, it represented an increase of 17% and 35% respectively over 2003. 25% of our web site traffic (155 countries) came from outside the United States with the top 10 foreign countries being (in order) Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Japan, and Iran. Also during 2004, we have had our web site translated into Spanish, French, and German. Please keep in mind that the reason that we are one of the most popular historical web sites on the Internet is the quality of the primary source documents that comprise a major portion of the site. If you haven't already, please dig out your old photos and documents and share them with the world. Contact us to submit items to us.

Mercer Wilson, Board Member, Dead at 85

Mercer Wilson, 85, of Charlotte, NC, died December 23, 2004. A 1944 graduate of Georgia Tech, Mr. Wilson served with the Special Engineer Detachment at the Y-12 facility in Oak Ridge, TN. In July of 2004, Mr. Wilson became a Board Member of our organization and also took on the added responsibility of being an advisor on the History of the SED Book Project (see below). Mercer Wilson was very proud of his participation with the Manhattan Project and he will be greatly missed.

Please Support Our Organization

We desperately need new members for our 501(c)3 non-profit organization, especially second and third generations of Manhattan Project veterans. This group holds the key to insuring that our mission of preserving the history of the Manhattan Project will be around for generations to come. Basic membership for family members and friends is $30.00 per year and it is tax deductible. So, please help us out in 2005 by becoming a member.

What Is Your New Year's Resolution?

As we enter any New Year, most of us give some thought to a "resolution" whereby we can improve some aspect of our life. This year, with the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II approaching, let's renew our efforts to thank all of the surviving World War II veterans, both military and civilian. When you meet someone on the street who you know to be a World War II veteran, or maybe you don't know him or her but they are wearing a hat with their World War II unit emblazoned on the front, stop and shake his (or her) hand and thank them for keeping our country and several other European countries free!!!

A&E History Channel: "Last Days of World War II"

Photo at left: Engineers at work in control bunker - Trinity Site - 10,000 yards west of ground zero - Speaking of thanking World War II veterans, the A&E History Channel is working on an ambitious project which will chronicle the last days of World War II. This multi-part series will begin airing in February and will continue through August 2005. Obviously the Manhattan Project played an important role in this time period and will be generously explored in this program. We have been instrumental in providing photos and documents to the producers as well as arranging for the interviews of Manhattan Project veterans, military and civilian. All interviews for the series are being conducted at New York City and Washington, DC. If you are a Manhattan Project veteran and are interested in participating, please contact us as soon as possible.

History of the SED Book Project Gets Under Way

Photo at left: Thousands of people at Oak Ridge made their home in these square hutments - We have begun work a 2-volume book which will chronicle the history of the Special Engineer Detachment of the Manhattan Project. Volume I will deal with Los Alamos and the Met Lab and Volume II will cover Oak Ridge. We have prepared "kits" which are being mailed out to former SED members. These kits include an alphabetical listing of Special Engineer Detachment members (about 900 for Los Alamos and 1,300 for Oak Ridge) as well as sample questions and SED organizational information. We are in the process of scheduling interviews with the veterans now. Kits are being mailed out to former SED's who are members of our organization. However, being a member of our organization is not mandatory and if you know of someone who is a former SED, please let us know as soon as possible. We are on a very tight schedule for this book project and wish to schedule interviews quickly.

Help Provide Pre-Paid Calling Cards to the Troops!

Photo at left: Specially modified tank used by Enrico Fermi to collect soil samples from ground zero after test - You may have seen or read about the urgent need for pre-paid calling cards for our men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. There is also a pressing need for these calling cards for our wounded servicemen and women who are hospitalized in Germany or in the U. S. at such hospitals as Walter Reed. Nothing improves morale like the ability to talk with family and friends. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, we have signed up with the Armed Forces Exchange to begin soliciting donations to provide these much needed pre-paid calling cards to our troops free of charge. The special pre-paid calling cards are provided by the Armed Forces Exchange and are specifically for members of the Armed Forces. There are 4 cards available. We will purchase these cards with donated funds and pay for the shipment of these cards to those in need. Donations for this program are tax-deductible.

Check Out Our Interactive Message Board

More than 4,000 people visited our message board during December and it is growing each month. We have hundreds of items posted including many questions submitted by our visitors. There are also dozens of requests from people looking for information about Manhattan Project veterans. These are broken down by location, ie., Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, 509th, etc. If you have a question or are looking for a long-lost relative or friend, take a few minutes to browse.

Some Food for Thought!!!

Photo at left: Member of the Oak Ridge Special Engineer Detachment above Y-12 facility - During the past 3 months we have received a number of interesting quotes. Here are just a few:

  1. You will soon break the bow if you keep it always stretched
  2. All men are alike in their lower natures it is in their higher characters that they differ
  3. A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs-jolted by every pebble in the road.
  4. You can't expect to meet the challenges of today with yesterday's tools and expect to be in business tomorrow
  5. I would rather live and love where death is king than have eternal life where love is not
  6. An incompetent attorney can delay a trial for years or months. A competent attorney can delay one even longer
  7. A person is always startled when he hears himself called old for the first time
