  • Welcome to our fourth newsletter for the year 2003. This newsletter is being brought to you by our e-mail distribution service called Constant Contact. In a time when all of us are being bombarded by unwanted junk mail, we need to take extra precautions to insure that only those interested in the history of the Manhattan Project receive this newsletter. If you have received this newsletter in error and are not interested in preserving the history of America's atomic bomb effort during World War II, please "click" on UNSUBSCRIBE at the bottom of this newsletter and that will permanently remove you from further distributions. For those of you who wish to continue to receive this newsletter throughout the next year, please "click" on Edit Your Interests at the bottom of this newsletter and review the information there. You may update the information as you see fit. IMPORTANT NOTE: WE HAVE DISCOVERED THAT AROUND 150 OF OUR SUBSCRIBERS HAVE NOT BEEN RECEIVING THE NEWSLETTER DUE TO ANTI-SPAM FILTERS. THIS IS AN ON-GOING PROBLEM FOR LEGITIMATE NEWSLETTERS BECAUSE MANY INTERNET PROVIDERS, IN AN EFFORT TO PREVENT SPAM, FILTER OUT A LOT OF E-MAIL THAT IT 'CONSIDERS' TO BE SPAM. FOR INSTANCE, NO ONE USING TIME WARNER'S ROAD-RUNNER CAN RECEIVE THIS NEWSLETTER. WE ARE NOW EXPLORING OTHER ALTERNATIVES.

Much has been happening with our organization over the past two months. Please take a moment to read each of the included articles. Each of the thumbnail photos throughout the newsletter represent new photos sent into us over the past 2 months. If you have any information that you would like included in our next newsletter, please let us know prior to October 31, 2003. Also, we would like to thank all of the individuals who have become members and those who have contributed historical content to our organization.

    Manhattan Project Veterans Digital Library

(Photo at left: Color photograph of the Y-12 Plant at Oak Ridge) - When we first started this web site project about 4 years ago, we had no idea of its potential. Today we are riding a wave that is having a significant impact on K-12 education in America. The U. S. Dept. of Education and the New York State and California Learning Standards now incorporate DBQ's (Document Based Questions) as part of K-12 history curriculums.

Alan November, a noted educator who instructs K-12 teachers throughout the United States, advocates the analysis of primary source documents as a learning tool that stimulates critical thinking. He has contacted our organization and will be using content from our web site for his workshops. What is interesting about this is that no other American historical event produced the quantity of primary source documents as did the Manhattan Project.

In the coming months we will be redesigning our web site using much more advanced technology. In addition to installing a sophisticated search capability, we will be embedding audio files and will be creating five entry points to the web site material: Middle School, High School, College, Life-long Learner, and Scholar/Researcher. Each entry point will provide the visitor with a sub-set of the material that is targeted to the anticipated needs of the visitor. Visitors will still have other means to access all of the material.

At the present time we have a tremendous outreach program to locate Manhattan Project veterans (civilian and military) and their families to obtain additional primary source documents. Primary source documents include photos, letters, interviews, certificates, official memos, military orders, etc. At the present time we have a little more than 4,000 primary source documents on the web site with about 1,500 still to add. We have been adding these documents to the web site under the veteran's name as part of our 'collections' section. You can provide a lasting tribute to a Manhattan Project veteran (military or civilian) by providing these important documents to our organization. Keep in mind that it has always been appropriate to provide such items to the Smithsonian or a historical society...however, when you do so, no one other than researchers will ever see them. This is your opportunity to make them available to students and others immediately. PLEASE SEE THE 3RD ARTICLE IN THIS NEWSLETTER FOR RECENT MATERIAL ADDED.

    Manhattan Project Reunion and Symposium
(Photo at right: Man inspects silver bullion received from U. S. Treasury for use in giant magnets at the Y- 12 Plant) We are rescheduling the reunion & symposium for Washington, DC somewhere between May 1, 2004 and the 3rd week of May.

We could not get enough participants interested in attending and thus decided it was better to wait. Initial plans call for it to be hosted by a hotel near Dulles Airport so that everyone will have the opportunity to see the newly restored Enola Gay which is the centerpiece of the new Air & Space Museum.

    Any suggestions are needed.

New Material on the Web Site
(Photo at left: Special Order Transferring 16 Men from Ohio State ASTP to the Special Engineer Detachment at Columbia Univ. & Photo at lower right: Los Alamos Security Guards on way to Hanford to pick up plutonium) Since our last newsletter, we have continued to receive several collections of memorabilia. These include photos, letters, oral histories, and documents related to the Manhattan Project between 1942 and early 1947. Over the past 2 months we have added around 500 items to the web site.

Recently added content includes: (1) The 59 page log book and diary belonging to Sgt. Abe Spitzer, the radio operator on Bockscar during the Nagasaki mission. This and other material provided to us by Joan Hinterbichler, daughter of Abe Spitzer. (2) Very unique and poignant photos of the first flag raising on Iwo Jima provided by Joe Papalia. (3) Photos and documents belonging to Col. Berton Burns, a pilot with the 58th Bomb Wing and 509th Composite Group - Tinian Island and Operation Crossroads. Items provided by Irene Mann, daughter of Col. Burns. (4) 24 very nice personal letters written by Fran Carroll, a researcher at the SAM Lab at Columbia Univ. to her future and then husband, Sgt. William Allman, a SED at the K-25 plant at Oak Ridge. Letters are written between early 1945 and early 1947 and were provided to us by Toney Allman, their daughter. (5) A very fascinating account of the Y-12 operation at Oak Ridge titled "Eastman Kodak and the Manhattan Project" by Dr. Robert Schrader, an engineer in charge of the chemical separation facilities. This provided by Dr. Schrader (6) Photos of the 509th CG belonging to Howard Galusha, a maintenance technician on Tinian Island, provided by his son, James Galusha. (7) Photos and documents belonging to Los Alamos & Trinity Site SED, William Stewart. Mr. Stewart recently passed away and these items were provided to us by his brother, Alan Stewart. (8) An excellent collection of Oak Ridge photos and a very informative record of personal experiences by Walter Calvin Moore. Mr. Moore held several important positions at the K-25 plant before and after the war.

    School's Back in Session
(Photo at left: Men of the 5th Marine Division carry the American flag up the side of Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima; Photo at lower right: Marines lower the first flag raised at Iwo Jima while second, larger flag is being raised in the background) You might be interested to know that we receive around 15,000 visitors a month from K-12 students during the months that schools are in session.

We have recently been featured in "American Teacher", a trade newspaper and by Alan November , a well- known educator who instructs students in the use of historical documents to stimulate critical thinking. Both of these are signs that we are having an impact on mainstream education, a major goal of our organization.

We greatly appreciate all of you who have taken the time to donate photos, documents, and letters. You can be assured that they are being viewed and appreciated by hundreds of students learning about the Manhattan Project.

Please Support Our Mission to Preserve and Exhibit
(Photo at left: Los Alamos Security Handbook & Photo at lower right: ID card belonging to SED William Stewart - Joint Task Force One - Operation Crossroads - 1946) We desperately need more members. The cost of joining is $25.00 for veterans and $30.00 for family members and friends. Those with the means and the willingness to donate more, we have special recognition areas to reflect your support. Please help us achieve new heights during the remainder of 2003.

Our mission is to preserve, exhibit, interpret, and teach the history of the Manhattan Project. This is a major endeavor and one which is critically important. Up to this point we have been successful beyond our expectations. However, until we receive major funding we are dependent upon the generosity of individuals.

We have been placing 'buttons' throughout our web site to encourage people to donate as little as $2.00 using any major credit card. Also, we have obtained 3 copies of the 1945 Telephone Directory for the Clinton Engineer Works. We have decided to auction one off to raise money for our organization. This directory is 48 pages long and in excellent condition. It contains the names of more than 3,000 Oak Ridgers along with their address and the company they worked for (ie., DuPont, Tennessee Eastman, etc.) Those interested in bidding on this unique item, please visit ebay.com and enter the item # 2195397652.

Remember that we are a 501(c)3 non-profit, tax- exempt organization and your contributions are 100% tax deductible. Please make checks payable to MPHPA and mail to: Manhattan Project Heritage Preservation Assoc.; P.O. Box 366; Montour Falls, NY 14865-0366 OR 'Click" on the link below to sign up on-line.

    New Manhattan Project Material Wanted
(Photo at left: Los Alamos Post Baseball Team & Photo at right: Men of the 509th Composite Group relax onboard the USS Deuel on way home from Tinian Island) Now is your opportunity to be included in the Manhattan Project Digital Library. We are averaging more than 1,000 visitors per day and this number increases by about 15% each month.

We can use any photos, documents, letters, etc. Everything provided is being digitized, enhanced, and optimized for presentation on the Internet. Space is not an issue; our web site is a little over 600 MB in size and we have unlimited space available.

Please consider donating your mementos to our non- profit organization or simply provide them to us temporarily so that we may add quality material to the web site.

Most people interested in the history of the Manhattan Project have seen all of the 'official' photos. What we are interested in primarily is the personal photos and documents. These lend a whole different perspective to the history and our visitors love them. Please contact us with any questions that you have.

Dept. of Labor - Energy Employee Compensation
(Photo at left: Air Force ID Card - 509th CG - Sgt. Abe Spitzer, Radio Operator; photo below right: Abe Spitzer in front of the B-29 'The Great Artiste') The mission of the EEOICP is to deliver benefits to eligible employees and former employees of the Department of Energy, its contractors and subcontractors or to certain survivors of such individuals, as provided in the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act. The mission also includes delivering benefits to certain beneficiaries of Section five of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act.

The benefits extend to civilian workers of the Manhattan Project who worked at specific locations and whose health was affected by specific diseases. Survivors of these workers are elgible for benefits. The Dept. of Labor has been in contact with our organization because they have had trouble in locating these workers. In addition, we show workers involved with hazardous materials at locations that the DOL had no record of.

We will be working with the Dept. of Labor to help publicize this program and assist civilian workers and their families in obtaining benefits. If you would like for us to assist you in determining whether or not you are elgible, please contact us. This service will only be available to paid members of our organization.

Please contact us at gadget1945@stny.rr.com with any questions.

We have recorded 20 over the past year. We have the question formats put together and conduct the recordings over the telephone.
