Putting the "Weapon" to Military Use

509th Composite Group

The "Leaflets" Dropped Over Japan

Immediately after the Hiroshima bombing, several "leaflets" were dropped in Japan warning the Japanese of impending "doom" should they decide to carry on the war.  There has been some controversy as to where "leaflets" were dropped and what they said.  Below is a sampling of "leaflets" that were dropped.

Leaflet #1...

When one's home appears to be falling, one does not run away.  Rather one repairs the bad places.

Japan is now facing a crisis.  In other words, the Army is the source of decay within your country.  That the Army is deceiving you regarding their strength is evidenced by the air raids that you have experienced recently.  Remove your war leaders and save your country!

Leaflet #2...

People of Japan!

A message from President Harry S. Truman of the United States of America.

Nazi Germany has been destroyed.  You citizens of Japan will be made aware of the tremendous offensive might of the combined land, sea and air forces of the United States.  As long as your government officials and military leaders persist in their war efforts we will increase our offensive posture and destroy all facilities that provide support for your armed forces.  Prolonging this war will only increase the suffering of the people.  There is nothing to be gained for the people.  However, we will continue our offensive until the Japanese army throws down its weapons and surrenders unconditionally.  Surrender will destroy the power of the military leaders who have brought the Japanese people to the brink of disaster and untold suffering to the soldiers and sailors whom you love.  Surrender will also permit them to return to their farms and workplaces.  Surrender WILL NOT mean a life of slavery for you.

Leaflet #3...

You can understand the frightening reality by seeing the destruction caused in Hiroshima by one bomb.

The United States hopes that you will plead with the Emperor to end this war so that it will not be necessary to use many atom bombs.

The President of the United States hopes that the thirteen articles will be approved quickly and that peace can come to the new Japan.

You must suspend armed opposition immediately.  Otherwise, the United States will use the atom bomb in addition to the superior weapons available to permanently end this war.

Evacuate the cities immediately!
