Putting the "Weapon" to Military Use

509th Composite Group

Activation & Organization

By direction of the War Department and the Second Air Force, the 509th Composite Group was activated on December 17, 1944.  The group strength according to the Table of Organization was to be 225 officers and 1,542 enlisted men.  The 509th Composite Group was comprised of the following units - the approximate strength of each unit is shown in parentheses:

  • Headquarters (99)
  • 393rd Bombardment Squadron (Very Heavy) (542)
  • 320th Troop Carrier Squadron (152)
  • 390th Air Service Group (193)
  • 603rd Air Engineering Squadron (225)
  • 1027th Air Material Squadron (140)
  • 1395th Military Police Company, Aviation (127)

On March 6, 1945, an additional unit, the 1st Ordnance Squadron, Special, Aviation (298), was activated and became part of the 509th CG.  This unit was manned to a large extent by hand-picked skilled machinists, welders and munitions workers.

Again, in June 1945, the unique character of the 509th Composite Group manifested itself in matters of personnel.  In June 1945, the 1st Technical Service Detachment became part of the 509th CG.  Also code-named Project Alberta (also referred to as the Los Alamos Team assigned to Tinian Island), this group was activated for the sole purpose of administering a variety of civilian scientists, security officers, military engineers (SED's), and Naval personnel.  Their mission was the final assembly of the atomic bombs.
