Putting the "Weapon" to Military Use

Constructing a nuclear weapon was one thing...making it small enough to fit in an airplane and being able to deliver it without "blowing themselves up" was another.

From a very early point, General Groves realized that delivering the "weapon" might end up posing the most difficulty.  Therefore, without knowing the final size of the bomb or exactly how it would work, he began developing the plans for putting the "ultimate weapon" to military use.

This would entail close cooperation with Army Air Force.  It would also require a specially dedicated and completely self-contained group of individuals.  The answer was the creation of the super-secret 509th Composite Group.

In addition, as the various components of both the uranium "Little Boy" bomb and the plutonium "Fat Man" bomb were being finalized at Los Alamos, plans would need to be initiated for the "final assembly" of the weapons on Tinian Island.  It was too dangerous to try and transport the completed weapons from Los Alamos to Tinian Island.

The creation of the "Project Alberta" team solved this last problem.  The Project Alberta team was comprised of 50+ individuals who were scientists, engineers and ordnance experts.  They trained at Los Alamos and then transferred to Tinian Island to work in the Bomb Assembly Area.
