  Espionage on the Manhattan Project

Main Page

Web Master's Note...

Being a top-secret military project, it is not surprising that espionage activities took place.  What is most interesting however, is that the primary threat came from our ally, the Soviet Union, instead of our enemy, Nazi Germany.

The most noteworthy case, of course, involved the Rosenbergs.  Much has been written about the Rosenberg case, and it would serve no point for me to elaborate on it any further other than to present a summary of the known facts along with links to detailed information.  In addition, in keeping with the overall presentation format of this web site, I will provide numerous photos and biographies.

According to recently declassified information from the Russians, there is little doubt as to the guilt of Julius Rosenberg.  However, there remains great doubt about the role that his wife, Ethel, played.  There is also little doubt that J. Edgar Hoover (often regarded as the "Most Dangerous Man in America") played a prominent role in using every conceivable "dirty trick" known to the FBI to "railroad" Ethel Rosenberg to her death.

Another interesting aspect to the Rosenberg affair were the actions taken by David Greenglass, member of the SED (Special Engineer Detachment) at Los Alamos, brother to Ethel Rosenberg, and betrayer extraordinaire.
