| During World War II, Monroe Messinger was recruited into the SED and assigned to the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, NM. As a sergeant, Monroe was in charge of the 35 or so men who comprised the very first Special Engineering Detachment at Los Alamos. This story illustrates how the Corp. of Engineers - Manhattan District recruited young, college educated men & women and the series of events that finally took them to that remote area in New Mexico - Los Alamos. |
