Women Pioneers in Science

  Back to Women - Main

Web Masters Note....

Several women had pioneering roles in the development of atomic energy.  Below are listed a few such women scientists.  We would like to expand this area.  If you know of a woman who played a scientific role, please contact us via feedback above.  Please "click" on a name below to read a short biography.

As an alternative to the listing of individuals below, we have also made available a series of photo galleries.  These galleries each contain 10 "thumbnail" photos and give you the opportunity to view them in groups prior to selecting the ones you want to enlarge.  As with all condensed graphics, these galleries may have unacceptable "load times" unless you are using a cable modem or something similar.  If you are looking for something in particular and do not see it on our pages, please contact us via "feedback" to see if we may have it in our files or know where to get it!

In reading the below biographies, you will notice a common element.  Almost without exception, these women pioneers were over-shadowed by their male counterparts and in many instances, gave up exceptional careers in favor of maintaining family harmony.  In some cases, innovative thought and experimentation were actually co-opted by their male colleagues.  Fortunately these women were of such notable character and intelligence that they were able to overcome these obstacles and their accomplishments in the face of such adversity will be forever noted.  The sad fact is that we will never know how many women scientific pioneers were unable to break through and the contributions they made may be forever lost!
