Everyone who participated in
the Manhattan Project received a certificate signed by Secretary of War
Henry Stimson. The date on the certificate was always the same:
August 6, 1945, the date the first atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese
city of Hiroshima. It was on this date that the war-time secret
first became known. 99.9% of those receiving the certificate had no
knowledge of what they had been working on until that day. Also, the
military personnel were issued separation papers upon their release from
the Project. Occasionally, personnel were given letters of
recommendation by J. Robert Oppenheimer himself. Others received
original orders in the case of military or letters offering employment on
the Project in the case of civilians.
A few of our members have been
gracious enough to submit these various documents so that they may be viewed by
our visitors. If you have such a document in your possession,
we would be honored to have it submitted for inclusion here. The
development of the atomic bomb was voted as the
top news story of the 20th century by USA
Today. You can memorialize someone's participation here.
