Manhattan Project Documents

Document 11

This document is a  copy of the original directive from General Thomas T. Handy, Acting Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army to General Carl Spaats, Commanding General, U.S. Army Strategic Air Forces, dated July 25, 1945, authorizing the 509th Composite Group to proceed with the delivery of its "first special bomb".  To illustrate the "high level" of this document, the final sentence states: "It is desired that you personally deliver one copy of this directive to General MacArthur and one copy to Admiral Nimitz for their information".  This document was provided courtesy of Mrs. Rebecca Webster. Rebecca's husband, Donald, was a physicist at the University of Chicago (with Fermi) and subsequently moved to first, Oak Ridge, and then later to Hanford.
