Manhattan Project Documents
Document #07 - During the period of June of 1943 thru March of 1946, my father, Michael J. Vickio was a military
policeman assigned to the Manhattan Project. During that time, he
maintained a brief diary. Included here are 3 pages from that diary, dated
July 16, 1945, August 6, 1945, and August 8, 1945. What is interesting is
that many assigned to the Project never knew the "real purpose" of the
work being performed but many were able to surmise what was going on.

"I have K.P. today. The electricity was off most all day - so we
had it easy because they couldn't cook everything on the menu. The
'big-explosion' will be at 4 A.M. tomorrow. It is bound to shorten the war
against Japan. It is supposed to be from 3,000 to 5,000 times stronger
than a 'block-buster' ".
Diary Page #2 - Dated August 6, 1945
"Monday - We just received word that the bomb that we were guarding here
'Atomic Bomb' has just been used on Japan for the first time. We had a big
celebration here today - as this place is the final assembly and experimental
project of the 'atomic bomb' ".
Diary Page #3 - Dated August 8, 1945
"Wed. - I have 'H' Building - so I work from 12 midnite until 8 A.M.;
The second atomic bomb was dropped on Japan at noon Japanese time. Russia
declared war on Japan today also - it can't last much longer".
