The above photo is the giant powerhouse serving the K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant built by the J. A. Jones Construction Company. Ground was broken on June 2, 1943 and the first unit went on line April 15, 1944. Built in 10 months, the steam power plant was the largest built anywhere in the world in one operation. It had a generating capacity of 238,000 kilowatts, or twice the capacity of TVA's Norris Dam. The main powerhouse contained three coal-fired boilers, each designed to produce 750,000 pounds an hour super-heated steam at a pressure of 350 pounds and a temperature of 950 degrees. It also housed fourteen turbo-generators ranging in capacity from 1,500 to 35,000 kilowatts. It was also the first power plant that could produce alternating current at five different frequencies.
