Fran to her Mother, Lena Carroll, July 27, 1945 Oak Ridge, TN ( On a working trip to Oakridge from NYC) (from Dunmore Hall 118, Oakridge, Tennessee) Dear Mother, A”13” if it ever gets to you in time to use it. What a fine time we had in Gatlinburg. Madeleine & I got off work at 8 Sat. morning & took a bus up. In the middle of the week we had called all four inns & several cabin courts & were informed that no accommodations were available- full up! We decided to go & see. After some tramping around we discovered rooms for ourselves for Sat. nite & then other rooms for Sun. & Mon. nites & rooms for Bill & two other soldiers for Sun. nite. Sunday the 5 of us hired a car for about 7 hours & we went to the top of the hills, climbed Clingham’s Dome, the climax was Three bears. One great big (or rather lil’ ol’) bear looked up over one side of the road & we just happened to see him & stopped the car & he strolled across the road & clambered up a cliff on the other side of the road! Monday we rode into the hills via horse. 2 ˝ hrs. in the morning & 2 ˝ in the afternoon. The rest of the time we spent consuming good food. We are all happy to hear that we terminate the 3rd & travel to N.Y. the 14th- no hitches. Be seeing you. Love, Fran (smudge here, marked “work dirt”) |
