Special Engineer Detachment - Massachusetts Institute of Technology & Operation Crossroads

Fay Cunningham was a member of the Special Engineer Detachment and was assigned to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he worked on the development of crucibles for the reduction of uranium and plutonium at Los Alamos.  He was in a group of 9 graduates (out of a class of 30) of the mechanical engineering ASTP at the Univ. of Maryland who were transferred to the Manhattan Engineer District at Oak Ridge.  In 1946 he was attached to Operation Crossroads to monitor radiation.
