In his capacity as District Engineer of the
Manhattan Engineer District, Col. (later Maj. General) Nichols supervised the research and
development connected with the design, construction, and operation of all
of the facilities required for the production of weapon-grade plutonium
and uranium 235. Born in 1907, Gen. Nichols passed away on Feb. 21,
2000 at the age of 92. (See complete biography and other information about
