James W. Osborn Collection

Los Alamos Special Engineer Detachment

The Zero Accident - Zero is my recollection of a runaway weapon-grade uranium chain reaction that auto-aborted because of an infinitesimal crack in the fuel containment package; if the crack had not been open, I have no doubt that the three experimenters who had been neutron radiated (66, 66, and 7.4 Rads) could very well have been killed.  The real probability of a mind-boggling catastrophe could be easily postulated when it is considered that the fuel-package contained ~80 pounds of U-235 contrasted with the Hiroshima bomb that contained only ~66 pounds.  Such an event occurring 2 months before Hiroshima might well have changed the history books, Don't You Think?  Read Jim's Essay on the "Zero Accident" here!
