Bernice & Michael Vickio Collection

Los Alamos Military Police & Nurses

Michael J. Vickio arrived in Los Alamos from Camp Butner, NC in November of 1943 as a member of the military police detachment.  He remained on guard duty until June of 1945 when he was transferred to the MP motor pool.  As a S/Sgt in the motor pool, he was responsible for many of the MP's vehicles.  In September of 1944, he was joined by his wife Bernice who was hired as a nurse at the Los Alamos Hospital.  Bernice was promoted to Nurse Supervisor in June of 1945 and placed in charge of the maternity ward, a very busy place in those days.  Both left Los Alamos in April 1946 and returned to their home in upstate New York.
