Manhattan Project Assignment:  Welder - Cook Electric Company

The following information was provided to us by Martha Michalak, the daughter of Albert Weigel...

"My father worked as a welder at Cook Electric Company in the early 1940's.  My brother remembers my father describing his workplace at the time.  He was presented with a drawing. untitled, and was told to produce the item as indicated.  There was none of the usual identifying language on the drawing.  His work area was a curtained and fenced off area and there was a guard on duty.  He was told not to discuss what he was doing with anyone.  He completed the welding job and at a later date (after the war), to his great surprise, he was presented with a Manhattan Project certificate (see lower left).  He thought that he had welded something that was a rack or cradle to hold something stationary.  But that was his best guess, he never had any confirmation.

"Regarding the photo, we cannot be absolutely sure that it was taken in relation to the Manhattan Project, but it was taken within the same time frame and he stored the two items together in his drawer."
