Cdr. Frederick L. Ashworth (USN) Collection

Image Gallery 2 of 4
Cdr. Frederick L. Ashworth held the title of Director of Operations of Project A (Alberta) on Tinian Island.  Also known as the 'Destination Team', this group of 54 men were comprised of civilian scientists and engineers, members of the Special Engineer Detachment, and U. S. Navy personnel.  Their responsibility was to assemble and make ready for delivery the two atomic bombs known as Little Boy and Fat Man.  He also flew as the 'Weaponeer' onboard Bockscar and was responsible for arming the Fat Man bomb during the flight to Japan. Cdr. Ashworth retired as a 3-star Vice Admiral and held a variety of important positions including that of Commander of the United States 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean.  The below collection of documents include important memos and transcribed telephone conversations between him and Navy Capt. William Parsons, deputy director at Los Alamos.  The time frame takes place between February and August 1945.  Joseph Papalia, a member of our Board of Directors, has played an important role in accumulating these important documents and digitizing them for our web site.
