The B-29 SuperfortressThe 509th Composite Group, commanded by Col. Paul Tibbets, was the highly secret organization that was charged with the awesome responsibility of delivering the first atomic bombs to Japan's mainland. The 509 was comprised of 15 specially configured B29 "Flying Fortresses". Below is a listing of those 15 aircraft. This information was taken from the book "Decision at Nagasaki" by Lt. Col. Fred J. Olivi (O-lee-vee), the co-pilot of Bockscar, the B29 that dropped the second atom bomb on the city of Nagasaki. This book is packed with technical information about the 509th. If you are interested in purchasing an autographed copy of this book, please contact us via e-mail. It is not available through bookstores or Amazon.com and is only available directly from the author.
