SED Yearbook - Oak Ridge, TN - 1945 - This is
not the original yearbook which was issued to members of the special
engineer detachment at Oak Ridge in late 1945. There were only about
1,500 copies of the original yearbook printed and 90% of these are
in the hands of SED veterans and/or their families. An original
yearbook goes for as much as $500 and they are seldom seen. You
won't even find these in any library as they are very rare. As the
largest on-line repository of Manhattan Project primary source
documents, our organization has produced a limited number of copies
of this 'one-of-a-kind' yearbook. This is a professionally created
copy on heavy-weight paper with a spiral binding similar to the
original. There are more than 150 pages in this yearbook. What makes
this yearbook so sought-after is that it contains the photos of more
than 1,200 men who made up the very elite unit of the Special
Engineer Detachment. In addition to the photos, the work assignment
and university affiliation is also shown for each member. The
yearbook contains the full history of the special engineer
detachment at Oak Ridge from 1943 thru 1945. It is divided into
chapters that represent all of the operational units at Oak Ridge:
X-10, Y-12, K-25, S-50, and the 'Castle'. The successful development
of the atomic bomb during World War II would not have been possible
without the contributions made by the special engineer detachment.
